EU and U.S. Sanctions Compliance
Over the past two decades, particularly since the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, economic sanctions have been increasingly used by governments and international organizations as a means to advance international peace and security as well as the national security and foreign policy of individual nation states. Frequently characterized as the alternative between words and war – between mere diplomacy and military action – economic sanctions essentially operate as restrictions on trade, prohibiting access to all or certain parts of the economy of a country (or group of countries) by identified bad actors, which can be entire governments, ruling regimes, companies and other entities, or individuals.
